Allegheny Athletics Announces 2012 Hall of Fame Class

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Five student-athletes and one of the most successful head football coaches in NCAA Division III history comprise Allegheny's 2012 Hall of Fame Class. The group is scheduled to be inducted as part of Reunion Weekend on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Tippie Alumni Center. This year's class delivered an NCAA team championship in football, and combined for 17 NCAA Championship appearances, 13 All-America honors, and 13 NCAC team titles while collecting a bevy of national, regional, and conference honors in keeping Allegheny among the most successful athletic programs in Division III.

Mike Gasper '99
Golf
Mike Gasper is part of a long line of outstanding student-athletes who have helped distinguish Allegheny as one the most decorated golf programs in NCAA Division III history. Arriving as a rookie in 1996, Gasper led the Gators to the first of four consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championships while earning First Team All-Conference and All-Region honors in the process. The Gators qualified for the NCAA Championships all four years during Gasper's tenure, including a fourth-place national finish in 1997 and a third-place effort at NCAA's in 1998. Although Allegheny boasts a rich history on the links, Gasper is one of only three players to garner All-Region honors all four years. He powered to medalist honors at the 1996 NCAC Championships and was a three-time tournament champion. Behind a slew of top-10 finishes, Gasper earned All-America honors after the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Ken O'Keefe
Football

One of the greatest coaches in Allegheny lore, Ken O'Keefe commanded the sidelines of the Gators' gridiron program from 1990-97. The 1990 NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, O'Keefe is the all-time winningest coach in Allegheny football history with a record of 79-10-1 (.883). Capturing five North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) titles and making five trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament, O'Keefe is most famous for leading the Gators to a victory in the Stagg Bowl en route to the 1990 NCAA Division III National Championship. During his tenure, in which he was the fourth-winningest football coach across all NCAA divisions, O'Keefe coached 37 All-Americans, four Academic All-Americas, four NCAC Players of the Year, and 77 First Team All-Conference performers. O'Keefe was elected to the Hall of Fame last year, but will be enshrined with the 2012 class.

Tony Pendolino '90
Wrestling
One of Allegheny's last true wrestling greats, Tony Pendolino battled an injury-plagued career en route to an improbable series of distinctions. One of three athletes in program history to earn multiple All-America honors, Pendolino was a two-time All-American at the 134-pound weight class. After winning the College's Outstanding Freshman Award in 1986, he missed the following season due to injury. Pendolino was magnificent upon his return, where he finished fifth at the 1988 NCAA Championships while earning additional honors as the Dennis Dee Andrews Memorial Wrestling Tournament and Miles S. Milliron Memorial Wrestling Tournament Most Outstanding Performer. The 1989 campaign started with a championship at the Ithaca Invitational, but once again a promising season was cut-short by injury. Pendolino showed remarkable resiliency during his senior year with another impressive comeback. He finished 36-6 in his final season and was a five-time tournament champion.  Capping his career with another All-America honor, Pendolino was named Allegheny College Male Athlete of the Year in 1990. Pendolino totaled the second-most wins in school history and compiled a winning percentage of .769 in 140 career matches.

Shane Ream '02
Football
Easily one of the greatest offensive players in Allegheny lore, Shane Ream was a mainstay among the nation's scoring and rushing leaders during his four years donning the Blue and Gold. A two-time Division III All-American and three-time NCAC All-Conference pick, Ream boasts more individual records than any other player in Allegheny's storied grid program. After scoring 20 touchdowns during his first two seasons, Ream blossomed into one of the nation's most electric backs as a junior.  He led the NCAC in scoring, rushing, and touchdowns that season, while also serving as the NCAA Division III scoring leader with 27 touchdowns. He averaged 163.6 yards per game (1,636) while leading the Gators to a first-place league finish. The following season, he once again ranked among the national leaders in scoring and rushing en route to Football Gazette/News First Team All-America accolades. Ream, who was a four-year starter and 2001 team captain, holds five single-season program records (scoring, rushing yards, rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns, all-purpose yards) and four career records (scoring, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, all-purpose yards).

Patrick Stewart '89
Swimming & Diving
Competing in the nation's most competitive conference, Patrick Stewart shined for the Gators' swimming & diving program during the latter half of the 1980s. Earning All-America honors all four years, Stewart helped lead Allegheny to four consecutive top-20 finishes at the NCAA Division Championships, including a seventh-place effort in 1986. He was a seven-time All-American, and reached All-America status in six individual events. Securing five first-place finishes at the NCAC Championships, Stewart was an eight-time All-NCAC performer and twice set the conference record in the 200 individual medley. With Stewart on the roster, Allegheny never finished worse than 17th at the national meet. In 1989, he was named Allegheny College Male Athlete of the Year.

Renea Surrena '92
Volleyball
Renea Surrena served as the Gators' starting setter for three straight years while earning First Team All-Conference plaudits from the NCAC in each of those seasons. Boasting a career winning percentage of .750, including a program-record 44 wins in 1988, Allegheny was one of the region's top teams during Surrena's tenure. After the 1990 and 1991 seasons, Surrena was selected to the NCAA All-East Region Team. Ranking second all-time at Allegheny in career assists (3,616), she paced the Gators to four consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championships including a pair of undefeated league campaigns. Surrena is a member of the NCAC's celebrated 1984-93 Volleyball All-Decade Team.

The induction ceremony will take place on campus at noon. Reservations are required for this event. If you are looking for registration information, please contact Lori Rigle in the athletic department at 814.332.3350 or lriggle@allegheny.edu.

Since 1980, Allegheny has inducted 165 student-athletes, 10 coaches, seven teams, and three administrators into the College's athletic Hall of Fame. A founding member of the NCAA, Allegheny proudly boasts 14 NCAA Division III National Championships and 180 NCAC Conference Championships while the program has totaled 540 NCAA All-America honors.
