Tennis Teams Learn NCAA Regional Locations, First-Round Opponents

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College tennis is ready to go dancing.

On Monday afternoon, the NCAA released the regional hosts and tournament brackets for the NCAA Division III Championships. The Allegheny men's and women's tennis teams will both hit the road for the first-round matches on Friday, May 8.

The Gator women will travel to Baltimore, Maryland, and the campus of fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins University for their regional matches. Allegheny faces Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first round on Friday, and the winner will advance to face the host Blue Jays in the second round on Saturday. Other teams heading to the Baltimore regional are No. 10 Carnegie Mellon University, No. 15 Case Western Reserve, Albright College, and St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The men's bracket has the Gators trekking to the other side of the Keystone State. No. 7-ranked Swarthmore College is the host of a five-team regional that includes No. 8 Carnegie Mellon, No. 43 Washington and Lee University, and Penn State Behrend. Despite a 45-minute distance between Allegheny and Penn State Behrend's campuses, the two teams will have to travel nearly six hours to Swarthmore for their first-round showdown on Friday.

More information, including first-round match times, will be released in the next few days. Full brackets for both championship tournaments are available on ncaa.com.

Scouting RPI
The Engineers made program history by winning their first-ever Liberty League championship on Sunday. Second-seeded RPI upset top-seeded Vassar College, 4-2, in the title match to punch its ticket to the national tournament, despite falling to Vassar in the regular season, 5-2. Located in New York's Capital District, RPI boasts a 12-6 overall record, which includes wins over two common opponents in Capital University and the University of Rochester. Allegheny has never faced RPI in dual competition.

Scouting Penn State Behrend
Penn State Behrend won its fifth consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) title and earned an autobid to the NCAA tournament by defeating the Atlantic East Conference champion, Marymount University, in a conference championship crossover. The Lions are 18-4 and have won 14 consecutive matches, a streak that began with a 5-2 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Washington and Jefferson College back on March 12. Since 1975, the Gators are 33-1 against Penn State Behrend, including five shutout wins in a row dating back to 2019.
