YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Allegheny College women's track and field team performed well against a loaded field from all levels of collegiate competition at Youngstown State University's Mid Major Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
YSU's Watson and Tressel Training Site hosted 45 colleges and universities, along with numerous running clubs, pitting the Gators against several Division I and II opponents. The field included D-I athletes from programs such as the University of Akron, Duquesne University, Mercyhurst University, Niagara University, and Saint Francis University.
While facing strong competition, the Gators earned seven top-25 finishes, highlighted by a pair of top-10 performances from sophomore
Evie Ellenberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and junior
Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills).
In Friday's long jump, Ellenberger was fourth out of 52. She only trailed two athletes from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, and Loreena Manser of D-II PennWest California, and was the only D-III jumper in the top 15. Ellenberger's second attempt measured 5.34 meters, but she beat that on her next jump by reaching 5.35 meters, allowing her to place ahead of D-I Akron's Shania Thomas by one centimeter.
Making her season debut, Bawek took ninth in the shot put on Saturday. She was the second-best D-III thrower in the event. Bawek's second throw was 11.09 meters, which allowed her to qualify for the nine-woman final round. She also surpassed 11 meters on her first throw of the finals at 11.06 meters, and she finished directly ahead of Lorah Thomas from D-I Saint Francis (11.03 meters).
Junior
Aubryanna Snyder (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) was the top D-III athlete in the triple jump and placed 12th out of 26 finishers. After fouling out on her first two jumpers, Snyder hit 10.60 meters on her final attempt. In the pole vault,
Corinne Inkley (Randolph, N.Y./Randolph Central) was the second-best among the D-III competitors and 18th overall at 3.32 meters.Â
Standouts on the track included
Renee Tetlow (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva), who was 20th out of 77 in the 400-meter dash, and
Shyann Rulander (Warren, Pa./Warren), who placed 22nd out of 84 in the 800-meter run. Both also ran their respective distances in Allegheny's distance medley relay along with
Anne Weis (Granville, Ohio/Granville) and
Samantha Oakes (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads). The DMR quartet came in 15th with a time of 13:51.27.
