ALTOONA, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's golf team nearly erased a nine-stroke deficit at the Sinking Valley Collegiate Classic, hosted by Penn State Altoona at the Sinking Valley Country Club, but fell just shot shy of first place on Monday afternoon.
The Gators posted the best round of the tournament during Monday's action with a 361 (+73). That allowed Allegheny to close the gap with Saint Vincent College, who ended the first round on Sunday with a nine-stroke advantage. The Gators found themselves down by just one stroke several times throughout the day, but couldn't get over the hump to complete the comeback. Saint Vincent earned the team title with a two-day score of 731 (+155), narrowly beating Allegheny, which carded a cumulative 732 (+156).
Allegheny was the only team with multiple players in the top five on the individual leaderboard.
Josephine Corey (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central),
Ada Coté (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), and
Kessler Potter (Kents Store, Va./Fluvanna County) finished in third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, out of 27 total competitors.Â
Corey, who was six strokes behind the individual medalist at 161 (+17), fired the best individual round of the tournament on Monday. The senior birdied the par-4 14th and 18th holes en route to a 5-over 77. Coté was just as impressive during the second round, as she led all Gators with four birdies and carded a 6-over 78. She finished the two-day event with a 165 (+21).Â
