EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's cross country team made the short trip to the campus of PennWest Edinboro to compete in the Fighting Scots' Doug Watts Open on Saturday.

In the first race of the season, the Gators went head-to-head with 10 Division II opponents. Allegheny, the only Division III team at the meet, placed seventh overall with 203 points. The Gators narrowly edged Commonwealth University - Bloomsburg, which finished in eighth place with 204 points. 

A trio of Gators finished inside the top 50 out of a field of 109 runners. In his first collegiate race, Tyler Biss (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) navigated the six-kilometer course at Edinboro in 20:25.1. Biss and Indiana University's Agustin Ruiz Lopez battled all the way to the finish line, but the Allegheny freshman beat Ruiz Lopez by one-tenth of a second. Caleb Freeman (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) was 36th with a time of 20:50.4, while fellow senior Cole Jooste (Upper St. Clair, Pa./Upper St. Clair) came in 49th place at 21:16.9
