HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team sent eight student-athletes to participate in the Hope Invitational, hosted by Hope College in Holland, Michigan, on Friday and Saturday.
Over the two-day event, Allegheny collected 20 wins. Three Gators advanced to the final round of their flight in singles competition, as did one doubles duo.
Freshmen
Adam Memije (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and
Zidaan Hassan (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) battled their way through Draw D and eventually squared off in the championship match. Memije's run to the finals included 8-0 victories over Kosuke Asada from Ohio Northern University and Jack Oswald from Adrian College. Hassan defeated Calvin University's Tanner Warners in the semifinals, 8-4, before falling to his former high school teammate in the finals, 8-3.
In Draw E,
Reid Stasolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) reached the finals. He defeated Aaron Davis of ONU and Hunter Napieralski of Hope with identical 8-1 scores in his first two matches. Stasolla then took down Calvin's James VanderArk in the semis, 8-6, but fell to Roosevelt University's DeMille Scarabello in the finals, 8-0.
Stasolla also qualified for the championship match in the Draw C doubles flight with
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István). The Gator tandem began with back-to-back 6-0 shutouts against teams from Ohio Northern and Adrian with 6-0 shutouts. After a 6-3 victory in the semifinals, Roosevelt's Lluc Mascaro Sierra and Juan Pablo Espinosa halted the run by Stasolla and Mihaly in the championship, 6-2.
