PENFIELD, N.Y. -- The Allegheny College men's golf team finished Tuesday's opening round at the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships at Midvale Country Club in Penfield, New York, in a tie for 31st place.
Temperatures were much cooler than last year's national championship tournament in Las Vegas. Although conditions were otherwise near-perfect for the first round, the course at Midvale proved challenging. The Gators concluded Tuesday with a 25-over 313, tied with Farmingdale State College for 31st place on the leaderboard. However, Allegheny is only four strokes back of a spot in the top 25.
No. 5-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University, who also played their first round at Midvale, leads the 43-team field with a 2-over 290. The IWU Titans hold a four-stroke lead over John Carroll University and Carleton College, which tied for second place at 294 (+6).
Allegheny combined for 10 birdies, eight of which came on the back nine. Every Gator had at least one birdie, but
Connor Bell (Montrose, Colo./Montrose) led the way with four. Individually, Bell and
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) tied for 75th place. After making the turn, Bell birdied the 12th, 16th, and 17th holes. The sophomore had Allegheny's best score on the back nine with an even 36. On the other hand, Hassenplug had the best score on the front nine with a 1-over 37. The first of his two birdies came on the par-3 ninth, where the senior came up clutch with a near 30-foot putt.
Dylan Kochis (Saint Augustine, Fla./B. Reed Henderson (Pa.)) was not far behind with a 7-over 79. The junior birdied consecutive holes on Nos. 12 and 13, including an excellent chip-in from 15 yards off the green on the 206-yard, par-3 13th.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the tournament will utilize a shotgun start in hopes of completing as many holes as possible before the rain. Allegheny will tee off from Cobblestone Creek at 8:05 p.m. The top 18 teams and top six individuals from the non-advancing teams after the second round will advance to the championship rounds at Midvale Country Club on Thursday and Friday.
