SEWICKLEY, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's golf team concluded the two-day Win Palmer Cup at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, in third place out of 11 teams.
During the opening round on Monday, the Gators were tied with DePauw University for second place with a 290 (+10). On Tuesday, Allegheny scored 319 (+39), equaling a cumulative 609 (+49). The hosts from Wittenberg University won the tournament with a 587 (+27), followed by DePauw in second place at 592 (+32). The field was very competitive, as teams third through ninth were only separated by six strokes.
Three Gators placed among the top 20 after posting strong first-round scores.
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) was tied for first place with an even 70 on Monday thanks to six first-round birdies.
Dylan Kochis (Saint Augustine, Fla./B. Reed Henderson (Pa.)) was one stroke behind Hassenplug, while
Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) posted a round of 73 (+3).
Although results on Tuesday weren't as good as the first round, Hassenplug still ended the tournament with a 36-hole score of 148 (+8), good enough for sixth place. Kochis finished in a five-way tie for 15th with a 152 (+12), while Melzar was one of seven tied for 20th at 153 (+13).
