STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --
The Allegheny College men's golf team showed no signs of rust in its spring debut with a 10-stroke victory at the two-day Pennsylvania Classic, hosted by Penn State Altoona at the Penn State Blue Course on Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30.

Allegheny topped a field of 17 teams, which included five Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponents. The Gators combined for a 5-over 581 and beat PAC rivals Washington and Jefferson College (591, +15) and Westminster College (592, +16), who trailed by 10 and 11 strokes, respectively. In the opening round, Allegheny carded a 292, by far the best on Saturday, as the Gators were the only team with a sub-300 score across the first 18 holes.

Not only did the team capture the tournament crown, but senior Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) took home individual medalist honors. Hassenplug sunk a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th hole to force a playoff against Penn State Altoona's Peter Nusbaum, who returned from a two-stroke deficit to tie Hassenplug with a cumulative 140 (-4). Both parred the first playoff hole on the par-3 14th, but back on the 18th, Hassenplug made a 10-foot birdie to secure the win.

A trio of Gators - Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School), Dylan Kochis (Saint Augustine, Fla./B. Reed Henderson (Pa.)), and Connor Bell (Montrose, Colo./Montrose) - ended the weekend as part of a four-way tie for ninth place with a 3-over 147. On Sunday, all three found success on the back nine, including birdies on the 18th to close their rounds.

Hassenplug wasn't the only Gator with an eagle at the Pennsylvania Classic. Senior Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) earned one on the par-5 ninth hole on Saturday. Junior Logan Greer (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) matched Hassenplug with an eagle on the 18th in the final round.
