TRAFFORD, Pa. -- During the final round of women's tennis weekly awards, the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) named
Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School) the Player of the Week and
Giada Palmieri (Berlin, Germany/Paulsen Gymnasium) the Newcomer of the Week.
It marks the third time this fall that Allegheny earned both awards during the same week. It's the second time Bassette has earned Player of the Week and the first time Palmieri has been tabbed the Newcomer of the Week this season.
Both Gators went 3-0, leading the team to its fourth consecutive undefeated PAC regular season and securing the top seed in the upcoming PAC tournament. Allegheny finished its conference schedule by sweeping both Saint Vincent College and Washington and Jefferson College, 7-0.
Bassette was a double winner against the Bearcats. In addition to a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles, she earned her biggest singles win of the year against Carolina Walters in a showdown between the top two players in the PAC. Bassette overcame a first-set loss to defeat Walters in a super tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5. Walters – the 2024 PAC Player of the Year – entered the match on a 33-match win streak after going undefeated in singles competition throughout 2024-25. Bassette then added another No. 2 doubles win against the Presidents.
Playing out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup, Palmieri won both of her singles matches against the Bearcats and Presidents. She outscored her opponents 24-2, dropping just one game against each of her opponents. The first-year standout from Germany took down Saint Vincent's Caroline O'Connor, 6-0, 6-1, before beating W&J's Bella Graham by the opposite score, 6-1, 6-0. Palmieri also added a victory at No. 3 doubles in the shutout over the Bearcats.
Allegheny (10-0, 8-0 PAC) earned home-court advantage for the PAC Championship Tournament. Following their first-round bye, the Gators will host a semifinal against the winner of the Geneva College-W&J quarterfinal on Thursday, October 16, at 4 p.m.
