WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Led by a career-best round from
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) on Sunday, the Allegheny College men's golf team tied for 10th place in a competitive field at the Northeast Elite Invitational at the Williamsport Country Club.
Playing against No. 23-ranked Franklin and Marshall College, teams receiving national votes such as the University of Rochester, McDaniel College, RPI, Penn State Altoona, and Hamilton College, plus several defending conference champions from across the northeast, the Gators finished in the middle of the pack. Allegheny tied McDaniel for 10th place out of 20 teams with a cumulative 591 (+23), the team's second-best score of the season.
Individually, Hassenplug continued to impress with one of the finest rounds in program history on Sunday. The two-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) medalist carded the best round of his career with a 5-under 66, becoming one of only eight golfers in program history to score a 66 or lower. The last player to do so was Matthew Del Rosso '21, who turned in 66 in the opening round of the Carnegie Mellon University Fall Shootout in the fall of 2018. With a two-day total of 139 (-3), Hassenplug not only placed fifth out of 104 total competitors but also tied his previous low and the fifth-best 36-hole score in team history.
Hassenplug's final round featured six birdies, five of which were earned on the back nine, as well as an eagle on the par-5 sixth. Success off the tee helped Hassenplug tackle longer holes all weekend. The senior finished below par on five of the six par 5s, with the lone exception coming with an even score on the 18th on Saturday. His 10 birdies over both rounds were tied for the most in the tournament.
Fellow senior
Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was one of six golfers tied for 25th place. Melzar was even with a 71 on Saturday and followed up with a 75 (+4) on Sunday for a 4-over 146.
Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School) led all Gators with two eagles, one shy of the tournament lead. In the opening round, Khan eagled the sixth and ended his second round with another on the 18th.
