MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's cross country team won its annual home meet, the 2024 Allegheny Classic, with a near-perfect score and seven runners inside the top 10.
In total, eight of the top nine finishers represented Allegheny, but that included alumnus Adam Cook '21, who scored for the team of former Gators in fifth place. The first four to the finish line were all current student-athletes, led by junior
Caleb Freeman (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth). Freeman was the only participant with a sub-22-minute time, completing the four-mile course in 21:53.
Desmond Corrado (Crafton, Pa./Carlynton),
Xavier Grove (Pittsburgh, Pa./CAPA), and
Patrick Sharp (Brighton, N.Y./Brighton) came in second, third, and fourth, respectively. Corrado and Grove each logged sub-23-minute times at 22:16 and 22:57.
Senior
Zack Wyse (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) beat Chatham University's Kenny Battistelli by just one second, as Wyse placed sixth at 23:40.
Cole Jooste (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and
Niko Moore (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) were separated by a mere three seconds, with Jooste finishing eighth in 23:47 and Moore in ninth with a time of 23:50.
As a team, Allegheny was one point over a perfect score at 16. However, it was more than enough to cruise to a victory over second-place Chatham, who received 69 points.
While the men ran the four-mile course, a group of Allegheny alumni dubbed the "Later Gators" navigated a shorter loop around the Robertson Athletic Complex trails. The Later Gators included members of the 1979 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship team, the first championship team in men's cross country history, as well as Hall of Famer Jennifer Colgrove Martin '83.
