MEADVILLE, Pa. -- It was a busy weekend for the Allegheny College men's tennis team, which started the new season by hosting the Allegheny Invitational at the Robertson Athletic Complex over the weekend.
The Gators won 20 out of their 30 total matches over the two-day event. Five different players went 2-0 in singles, while four of Allegheny's five doubles tandems went undefeated.
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet), the reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Year, and
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad and Tobago/Fatima College) each finished 5-0 to lead the way for Allegheny. As a team, they won all three doubles matches, including a tight 7-5 victory over RIT's Grahith Movva and Christian Berko.
The team's two newcomers,
Reid Stasolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and
Benedek Kaibas (Salgotarjan, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium), started their collegiate careers off by pairing up for two doubles matches. Stasolla and Kaibas took down duos from Juniata College and Baldwin Wallace University by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Kaibas also won his two singles matches, highlighted by a 10-8 tiebreak victory over Tory Johansson from Oberlin College.
