FAIRVIEW, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's cross country team opened the 2023 campaign with a strong performance at Gannon University's Race at the Park, a six-kilometer run held at Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview, Pennsylvania.
More than half of the field was made up of Gators, who competed against Division II opponents from Gannon and Mercyhurst University on Friday evening. Allegheny placed second with 40 points, trailing the Golden Knights by nine but beating the Lakers by 17.
A pair of seniors,
Peter Lantz (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and
Colm Mulligan (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline), paced Allegheny by placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Lantz finished the 6K in 19:39.5, and Mulligan reached the finish line less than 10 seconds later.
Making his collegiate debut in the Blue and Gold was
Sam Hetrick (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown), who placed eighth out of 27 competitors with a time of 20:06.5.
The next group of Gators, the trio of
Cole Jooste (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair),
Caleb Freeman (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth), and
Joe McAuliffe (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson), finished consecutively in 10th, 11th, and 12th.
