YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Allegheny College women's indoor track and field team opened the 2022-23 season at the YSU Icebreaker, hosted by Youngstown State University at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Friday.
Fourteen Gators participated in seven different events against a diverse field that included a variety of Division I, II, and III opponents. Two Allegheny student-athletes recorded top-10 finishes in the shot put and the 400-meter dash.
Second-year thrower
Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) was one of five Gators to compete in the shot put. She led the team with a personal-record toss of 12.09 meters and placed seventh.
Laila Davis (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) came in 13th out of 66 throwers in the shot put with a mark of 11.04 meters. Davis also had the team's best distance in the weight throw; she cleared 14.25 meters and finished 14th out of 47.
Mihaela Toader (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), who ran both the 200- and 400-meter dash, had an impressive showing in the latter. The senior placed 10th with an indoor PR of 59.87 seconds, which was the second-best time by a D-III runner at the meet.
Melina Mangino (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) posted two PRs in the qualifying races for both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. The senior sprinter trimmed nearly three-tenths of a second off her previous best in the 60 at 8.28 seconds and was five-hundredths of a second better in the hurdles at 9.78 seconds.
