GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Allegheny senior shortstop
Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) was named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® First Team, announced the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Gators are part of District 4, which consists of all Division III institutions in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Bristol was one of just two North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) student-athletes on the all-district teams as he was joined by Wabash catcher Erich Lange.
After missing all of last season with an injury, Bristol returned to the lineup as a steadying presence for the Gators. He led the team and ranked among the league leaders with a .376 batting average, 50 hits and 12 stolen bases as the team's primary lead-off hitter. He also ranked second on the team with a .449 on-base percentage, placing him in the top 20 of the NCAC. The Orchard Park, New York native started all 34 games he appeared in and had six extra-base hits (five doubles, one triple), while driving in 22 runs and scoring 27. His 20 walks were also second for the Gators. He held down the shortstop position to the tune of a .972 fielding percentage, making just four errors in 143 chances, while taking part in a team-high 18 double plays.
In the classroom, Bristol carried a 3.80 grade-point average as a computer science major with double minors in economics and mathematics. He graduated as a Distinguished Alden Scholar, member of Chi Alpha Sigma and the NCAC Academic Honor Roll. He was also a part of the winning team at the 2018 Zingale Big Idea Competition, a contest sponsored by Allegheny's Center for Business and Economics which is modeled after ABC's popular "Shark Tank" show.
Bristol is the first Allegheny baseball student-athlete to receive Academic All-District® honors since
Mike Kastelic earned the recognition in 2013.
The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Baseball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. To be eligible for the award, nominated and voted on by Sports Information Directors, student-athletes must be of sophomore or above academic class, hold at least a cumulative 3.30 GPA and be a starter or important reserve on their team.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third team (when selected) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in June.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
