WOOSTER, Ohio -- Allegheny College and the College of Wooster needed an extra inning to decide Thursday's non-conference clash at Art Murray Field, but the Fighting Scots walked away with a 10-9 victory on their home diamond.
The Gators (6-5) and Fighting Scots (10-2), who received votes in the latest edition of the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll, went back-and-forth throughout the contest.
In the top of the second, Allegheny scored the first run on a double by
Zach Miner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). In the following frame, Wooster's Matt Herlick slugged a solo home run to even the score at 1-all. Down 2-1 in the fifth,
Connor Kunkle (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) doubled and later scored on a sac fly from
Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell) to tie things at 2-2.
An error in the bottom of the fifth allowed the hosts to pull ahead with a trio of unearned runs, but Allegheny regained the lead in the sixth. Following RBI base hits from
Tommaso Floro (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and Miner, Kunkle chopped the ball through the left side of the infield to plate both runners and jump ahead 6-5. Miner added another RBI with an infield ground out in the eighth before Wooster tied the score at 7-all in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Herlick drove in one run with a sac fly to center field, before Aidan Krantz scampered home from third on a rundown between first and second.
In the top of the 10th, Allegheny put two on base when a pitch hit
Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and
Johnny Hughes (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) earned a base on balls. However, the next two batters flew out to end the inning. Wooster's David Guilden then led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple, and after two intentional walks to create a double-play possibility, Zach Barienbrock walked off with an RBI base knock.
