MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team collected a sweep of John Carroll in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday (March 15) in Meadville.
The Gators won the first game 2-0 and the second game 10-3.
Game One - Allegheny 2, John Carroll 0
The Gators got on the board in the bottom of the second.
Jake Fix (Westlake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) hit a lead-off single through the right side of the infield. After advancing on a
Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) groundout,
Michael Alspaugh (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drove him in on a single up the middle.
In the fourth,
Ryan Cochran (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) was hit by a pitch to start the frame and eventually reached home on a Banez RBI single, making it 2-0.
The two runs proved to be all the Gators needed as starting pitcher
Ben Shields (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area) and reliever
Johnny Hughes (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) combined for the shutout, allowing just five total hits while striking out 11 batters.
Inside the Box
- Shields earned the win, his third of the year. He went 6.0 innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six and not allowing a run.
- Hughes earned his first career save, pitching the final three innings. He did not allow a hit while striking out five, including the final three batters in the ninth.
- Banez had a pair of hits while driving in a run.
- Liam Irving (Olney, Md./Sherwood) also had a pair of hits, including a double.
- Fix had a multi-hit game.
- Alspaugh drive in a run on his hit while Connor Kunkle (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) also registered a single.
Game Two - Allegheny 10, John Carroll 3
The Blue Streaks took advantage of wild pitches in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs on one hit.
The Gators made up a run in the second. Cochran reached on an error and moved to third on a Fix single, placing runners on the corners with no outs.
Tommaso Floro (Sewickley Pa./Quaker Valley) would drive Cochran in on an RBI single through the right side of the infield, cutting the Blue Streaks lead to one run.
Allegheny added three more runs in the third as they moved into the lead.
Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell) started the frame with a single before Kunkle doubled to put two runners on. The Blue Streaks would get one out at the plate, but Irving brought Kunkle home on an RBI bunt single, tying the game at two runs. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Banez delivered a two RBI single up the middle, plating Irvin and
Zach Miner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) as the Gators gained a 4-2 lead.
Fix and Banez hit back-to-back singles to begin a six-run sixth inning .
Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) brought both in as he doubled off the left field fence, extending the lead to 6-2. The Gators loaded the bases later in the inning. Miner drove Philson in before Irving drew a walk to score Eberhardt. Their fifth run of the inning came off the bat of Cochran as he drove in Kunkle on a fielder's choice. The final run came on a double steal that saw Miner come across the plate.
The Blue Streaks would add a run in the ninth, but the Gator pitchers limited them to just four hits while producing 15 themselves to earn the sweep.
Inside the Box
- Evan Belkin (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) earned the win in relief. He pitched five innings, allowing just one hit.
- Dawson Thomas (Espyville, Pa./Conneaut Area) pitched two innings, allowing just two hits.
- Banez drove in two runs on three hits.
- Philson also drove in two runs off of two hits with a double.
- Kunkle and Fix had multi-hit games as well.
- Floro drove in a run on two hits.
- Irving had a two RBI game while Miner and Cochran also registered a hit.
