OBERLIN, Ohio— The Allegheny College men's tennis team concluded play at their opening weekend tournament at the 10
th Annual Oberlin Invitational.
Sunday's matches were in the singles flight. The Gators collected seven wins on the day.
Matt Andrus had a pair of wins. His first match against Joaquin Lerner of Earlham College. After Andrus took a 4-1 lead in the opening set, Lerner retired. In his second match, Andrus took on conference foe Justin Lee of Oberlin. Andrus cruised in the match, picking up his second victory of the day 8-1.
Ewan Malenfant joined Andrus with a pair of victories. In his first match, Malenfant controlled the entire duration as he downed Eddie Schartman of Baldwin Wallace University 6-1, 6-1. Malenfant continued to roll on the day as he defeated Jonathan Brunnet of Ohio Northern University 8-0 to close the day.
After picking up a pair of wins in doubles on Saturday,
Jacobi Stringer picked up a singles win Sunday. The sophomore faced Doug Moore of John Carroll University. The match was close, but Stringer was able to break Moore en route to an 8-6 win.
Cooper Miller faced Skyler Kane of Division-II Tiffin University. Miller came away unscathed, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
Colton Johnson Taylor closed out the day for the Gators with a marathon win against Andy Siciliano of John Carroll University. Johnson Taylor made quick work of the first set with a 6-2 win. The second set was tighter, as the two were tied with six games apiece. Sciliano prevailed in the tiebreaker 7-4 to force a super tiebreaker to determine the outcome of the match. The extra session was just as close as the second set, but this Johnson Taylor overcame Sciliano as he took the tiebreaker 11-9 to win the match.
The Gators make their home debut Saturday (Sept. 22) as they compete at the Harvey and Nancy Heath Gator Invitational.
