OBERLIN, Ohio— The Allegheny College men's tennis team opened their 2018-19 season at the 10
th Annual Oberlin Invitational Saturday (Sept. 15).
In doubles action, the Gators collected three wins.
Jacobi Stringer and
Mackenzie Knowlton had two of the three Gator wins. In their first match, the sophomore duo faced Abdrew Tringer and Sean Padden of John Carroll University, cruising to an 8-1 win. In their second match, Stringer and Knowlton took on Skyler Kane and Ryan Gase of Division-II Tiffin University, defeating the two in a clean 8-0 sweep.
Matt Andrus and
Cooper Miller also collected a doubles win. They faced Dominica Polifron and Matt Harris of Baldwin Wallace University, picking up an 8-3 win.
Wonjoon Cho and
Colton Johnson Taylor had a close matchup at doubles against Division-II Ashland University's Jordan Phelps and Colton Clark. The match was even throughout but a late break gave Ashland a 9-7 win.
In the singles portion of the day, the Gators collected four wins.
Zach Anderson made quick work of Oberlin College's Justin Lee, defeating the conference foe 6-2, 6-0.
Johnson Taylor faced his second Division-II foe of the day against Tiffin's Austin Mohamedall. Mohamedall won a close 6-4 opening set before Johnson Taylor rebounded with a 6-3 second set win. In the super tiebreaker, Johnson Taylor controlled the momentum and flow as he captured it 10-2.
Matt Andrus collected his second win of the day against Cam Cohen of Oberlin. The first set was tight, but an Andrus break gave him a 7-5 win. The momentum carried over from the first set as Andrus won the second set in an easy 6-1 fashion.
Ewan Malenfant also picked up a singles victory for the Gators. Malenfant won a close 6-4 opening set against Parker Holyn of John Carroll. The second set was closer as the two were tied at six games apiece. Similar to the rest of the match, the tiebreaker was closely contested but Malenfant persevered with a 7-5 win.
The Gators continue play at the Oberlin Invitational Sunday (Sept. 16).
