ERIE, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's tennis team opened up the spring portion of their schedule in a rematch of the first round of the 2017 Nancy and Harvey Heath Invitational against defending Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Champion and 2017 NCAA Division-III qualifier Franciscan University Friday (Feb. 16) in Erie.
The Gators picked up the win 8-1.
The third doubles team of
Niall Kneerim and
Mike Siegel were the first off the court as they cruised to an 8-3 win against Jack Galla and Luke Conrad. The first doubles team of
Jai Redkar and
Cooper Miller followed up with a close 8-5 win against Jarek Sulak and Jake Haffner.
The second doubles match between
Colton Johnson Taylor and
Zach Anderson and John Gallagher and Connor Jooste was closely contested. Tied at seven games apiece, the Gator duo won the final two games to take it 9-7, completing the doubles sweep.
Johnson Taylor earned the first victory in singles for the Gators, besting Sulak at second singles 6-2, 6-1.
Redkar clinched the match for the Gators at first singles. After winning the first set 6-4, set two went into a tiebreaker. Redkar was able to break Haffner as he won the breaker 7-4 to seal the win.
At sixth singles,
Mackenzie Knowlton had a close match against Luke Conrad. After Knowlton won the opening set 6-3, the two went into a tiebreaker in the second set. Similar to Redkar's results, Knowlton also collected a 7-4 win in the extra session.
Anderson collected is second win of the evening at fourth singles 6-3, 6-1 against Jooste.
Siegel had a close match at third singles against Gallagher at third singles, but ultimately fell in a superbreaker 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5.
The final match of the evening was at fifth singles between Miller and Galla. Miller picked up the hard fought win 7-5, 6-3.
The Gators are back in action next Friday (Feb. 23) as they open North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play against Denison University in Erie.
