MEADVILLE, Pa.-- The Allegheny College men's tennis team opened the season against Division-II Mercyhurst University Wednesday (Sept. 6).
The Lakers won the match 8-1. At the end of the 2016-17 season, Mercyhurst was ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region.
The first doubles team of
Jai Redkar and
Cooper Miller had a back-and-forth contest against the Lakers' Nenad Terzic and Cormac McCooey. At the end of last season, Terzic and McCooey were the top-ranked duos team in Atlantic Region. With Mercyhurst leading 6-5, the Gator duo started a rally. The Gators broke the Lakers to tie the match at six. In the following game, Redkar held serve to put the Gators ahead. After switching sides, the Gators won their third straight game to take match 8-6.
The Lakers managed wins at second and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles competition.
Mercyhurst swept the singles portion to seal the win.
At first singles, Redkar fell to Terzic, who was ranked second in the Atlantic Region at the end of last season, 6-2, 6-2.
At second singles,
Colton Johnson Taylor faced McCooey. McCooey took the first set 6-1 before Johnson Taylor fought back to win set two 6-3. However, McCooey gained an early lead in the third set tiebreaker, winning 10-6.
The Gators are back in action Saturday (Sept. 9) at the Harvey and Nancy Heath Gators Invitational. They will face Westminster College in the opening round.
