Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team overcame a deficit late in regulation but ultimately fell to in double overtime to DePauw University Saturday (April 15) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.
The Gators got on the board early as
Maddie Olson scored just 33 seconds in. After the Tigers scored three minutes later, the Gators scored five unanswered to take control.
Katie Weiss made it 2-1 just before the 23 minute mark of the half. Three minutes later,
Alexa Maloney scored unassisted to push it to 3-1. Thirty seconds after the Maloney goal, Olson scored off a feed by
Taylor Vigneri. Maloney then scored back-to-back goals off assists by Weiss and
Alina Nieratko.
The Panthers answered with three straight goals to cut the lead to 6-4 but the Gators closed out the half strong.
Christine McGrath scored with 90 seconds left in the half to push the lead to 7-4. Maloney closed out the half with her fourth goal, coming off a pass from Olson to give the Gators an 8-4 advantage at the half.
After nearly seven scoreless minutes to open the second half, the Tigers scored a pair of goals to cut the lead to 8-6.
Shelby Piper answered for the Gators two minutes later off an assist from Weiss. However, the Tigers would tie the game at nine with three straight goals over a three minute stretch.
Piper put the Gators back in front with her second goal of the half midway through. Once again, the Tigers responded with a big run, scoring four unanswered to take a 13-10 lead with six minutes to play.
The Gators fought back in the closing minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Jessie Thiessen got the rally started for the Gators with an unassisted goal. Piper found the net for the third time with 1:14 to play, cutting the lead to one. With forty seconds to play, Olson earned a free position shot and buried it to send the game into overtime tied at 13.
In the first overtime session, the Gators tallied three shots on net but DePauw goalie Lis Hawkins saved each shot.
The Gators won the draw control to start the second overtime but turned it over. Twenty four seconds in, the Tigers took advantage as Emma Flynn scored on an assist from Emily Scinta for the gamewinner.
Maloney finished the game with four goals, Olson netted three goals while assisting on one. Piper also scored three times. Weiss had three points on one goal and two assists. Thiessen and McGrath had a goal while Vigneri had an assist.
Kaelin Clogan and Weiss had four groundballs apiece to lead the Gators. The Gator defense played well, forcing 14 turnovers. Thiessen,
Brie Freeman and
Laurence Busque caused three turnovers apiece. Thiessen also had six draw controls.
In net, Clogan made 11 saves.
Emily Scinta and Nicole Gibson led the Tigers with three goals apiece. Hawkins made 13 saves.
The Gators are back in action Tuesday (April 18) for a NCAC contest at Hiram College.
