Gators Fall in Extra Innings to John Carroll

BECKLEY, W. Va.—The final game of the three game series between the Allegheny College baseball team and John Carroll went into extra innings but unlike the first two games of the series, the Gators fell 11-10 in 10 innings Sunday (Feb. 26).

The Gators won the opening weekend series 2-1 with a pair of wins Saturday (Feb. 25).

Cullen Flaherty earned a walk to start the game.  After he advanced to second on a passed ball, Chase Davis advanced him to third on a sacrifice.  Flaherty reached home for the first run of the game on an Austin Bristol sacrifice fly to left field.  However, the Blue Streaks answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Tyler Wagner led off the second with a single.  Noah Shannon followed up with another single to move Wagner to second.  Patrick Orr hit a sacrifice to the pitcher to put both runners in scoring position.  Vincent Carone brought Wagner home on a groundout to give the Gators the lead back, 2-1.

In the bottom of third, the Blue Streaks plated a pair of runs to move ahead, 3-2.

Andrew Dawson and Davis hit back-to-back singles to lead off the fifth inning.  After Bristol was hit by a pitch, Jacob Shick hit into an error to bring Dawson home and tie the game at three.

After the Blue Streaks scored in the bottom of the frame, the Gators got the run back and more in the sixth.  Carone led off with a single and moved to third on a Dawson hit to center field.  Davis brought Carone home on a fielder's choice to tie the game at four.  After Bristol was walked, Shick hit a sac fly to left field to bring Dawson home and give the Gators a 5-4 lead.  After the sac, Wagner loaded the bases with a single.  With the bases loaded, Shannon earned a walk to increase the lead to 6-4.  Orr followed up with a single which brought Bristol and Wagner home to grow the lead to four runs.  The Gator offense continued to run on all cylinders as Carone singled to bring Shannon home and make it 9-4.

The Gators loaded the bases once again in the seventh with one out.  Wagner hit a sac fly to right field, bringing Davis home to increase the lead to 10-4.
The Blue Streaks plated four runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-8.

In the bottom of the ninth, John Carroll tied the game with a pair of runs to send the game into extra innings.

Ethan Pawlak hit a two out single in the tenth but the Gators were unable to bring him home.

In the bottom of the frame, the Blue Streaks scored with two outs to pick up the win.

Dawson and Wagner both went three-of-five at the plate with a pair of runs.  Wagner also added a RBI.  Carone also had a pair of hits and RBI.  Davis came across the plate twice and had a RBI.  Orr finished with two RBI and a hit while Shannon and Bristol had a run and a RBI apiece. Pawlak had a RBI while Flaherty had a run.

Robert Julian got the start for the Gators on the mound.  He went 4.0 innings giving up three runs.

The Gators are back in action March 4 against Case Western Reserve in Washington, Pa.
