Gators Win Opening Set but Fall to Wooster

Box Score WOOSTER, Ohio—The Allegheny College volleyball team won the opening set but ultimately fell 3-1 at the College of Wooster Wednesday (Oct. 11) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action.
 
The Fighting Scots won the sets 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.
 
The Gators got off to a fast start to the game, winning the opening three points.  They quickly upped their lead to 8-3 before Wooster called timeout.  Following the timeout, the Fighting Scots slowly chipped away at the lead, tying it at 13.  After their own timeout, the Gators went on a 6-1 run to move ahead 19-14.  The Gators controlled the pace throughout the rest of the set, wrapping up the 25-21 win on a Rebecca MacQuarrie ace. 
 
The Fighting Scots got off to a quick start in set two, taking a 9-4 lead, forcing a Gator timeout.  Following the timeout, Wooster kept the pace up as the Gators called a second timeout down 14-7.  The Fighting Scots closed out the set on an 11-8 run, winning 25-15, to even the match at 1-1.
 
The teams went back-and-forth throughout the early parts of the third set until a 6-2 run gave Wooster a 17-11 lead.  The Gators called a timeout trailing 19-13.  Following the timeout, the Gators brought the score within four at 21-17 but the Fighting Scots closed out the set on a 4-1 run to take a 2-1 lead. 
 
The Fighting Scots started the third set on a 9-1 run.  The Gators pulled within five points at 17-12, forcing a Wooster timeout.  After the timeout, the Gators brought the lead to 20-16 but the Fighting Scots went on a 4-0 run to earn a match point.  The Gators staved one off but ultimately fell 25-18.
 
Grace Lengauer led the Gators with nine kills.  Karissa Welker, Leah Franzluebbers amd Hannah Cubarney had seven kills apiece while Alysha Crowther had six to go with four blocks.  Justine Kelly had 33 assists. 
 
Terra Schall led the Gator defensive effort with 17 digs.  Rachel Slotterback also finished in double digits with 11 digs.  Kylee Karczewski had nine digs while MacQUarrie had eight. 
 
The Gators are back in action Saturday (Oct. 14) for a NCAC match at Denison University.
