MEADVILLE, Pa. - Visiting Thiel took advantage of five first half Allegheny turnovers to defeat the Gators 44-21 under the lights at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Each of Allegheny's first four possessions in the first half resulted in a turnover, allowing Thiel to jump out to a 21-0 halftime lead. The Gator offense got on track in the second half, but the early miscues copuled with a strong Thiel running game proved too much to overcome.
In his first game as Allegheny's feature running back, sophomore
Tyler Balla ran for a career-high 113 yards and a touchdown, while classmate
Logan Lee completed 11 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns, all in the second half. Junior return man
Jake Wilson (pictured above) turned in a dynamic performance, establishing a new program record with 223 kick return yards, good for an average of 37.2 yards per try.
The Gators couldn't have gotten off to a better start in head coach
B.J. Hammer's Allegheny debut, as Wilson returned the opening kick 30 yards to set up the Gator offense at the Allegheny 40. A pair of Balla runs, followed by an offsides penalty on Thiel, moved the ball to the Thiel 29. An 8-yard pass from senior
Jon Nigro to freshman
Alex Victor, followed by a 13-yard scamper by Balla, gave the Gators first-and-goal just inside with two-yard line. The drive would abruptly stop, however, as Thiel recovered a fumble on the goal line, thwarting the Gators' 60-yard opening drive.
Thiel would then go to its ground game to score the game's first points, as Payton Hicks closed out the 98-yard drive with a 40-yard touchdown run to give the Tomcats a 7-0 lead with 7:28 left in the first quarter. The Tomcats amassed 85 of the 98 yards on the ground.
Wilson returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to set up first-and-goal at the Thiel nine, but the drive would abruptly end two plays later on a strip-sack on the 17. Thiel again made the Gators pay for the turnover, using seven plays to cover 83 yards, highlighted by a 46-yard pass from Ryan Radke to DeShawon Bracy, and capped off with Hicks' second score of the quarter, this time from 10-yards out, to go up 14-0 with 2:30 left in the quarter.
On the next trip, the Gators were forced to punt from their own 30, but were given a second life after a roughing the kicker penalty set up first down at the 45 in the opening minute of the second quarter. Allegheny couldn't capitalize, however, as the Tomcats forced and recovered another fumble at the Allegheny 40. Six plays later, the Tomcats made it 21-0 on a 15-yard touchdown run from Nick Barca with 10:40 left in the half.
Wilson again gave the Gators excellent starting position, this time using a 42-yard return to start Allegheny out just inside midfield. Nigro completions to
John McFarland and
Ben Bachik moved the ball to the Thiel 25, but Thiel's Jake Elk intercepted a third-down pass attempt at the Thiel 19, and returned it 72 yards to give the Tomcasts first-and-goal at the Allegheny nine. The Gator defense held, forcing an incompletion before ceding just five yards on back-to-back runs to set up fourth-and-goal. Going for it on fourth down, Radke found Ryan Rowland at the one, but
Tristan Rhoades stopped the tight end just shy of the goal line for the turnover on downs.
After the teams traded punts, the Gators took over on their own 28 with 2:24 left in the half, and quickly moved into Thiel territory after a pair of Balla runs netted 28 yards. An 11-yard pass from Nigro to Balla moved the ball to the Thiel 15 with 25 seconds left, but the Gators again came up empty, as Elk ended the half with his second interception to send the Tomcats into the locker room with the 21-0 lead.
Thiel's Jaquan Hicks returned the second half kickoff 50 yards to the Allegheny 45, and the Tomcats needed just five plays - and received some luck - to add to its lead. On third down at the 23, Radke went for the end zone, and the ball looked to be deflected away by a Gator defender. It took a fortuitous bounce, however, and was snatched out of the air by Rowland in the end zone to make it 27-0 with 12:50 left in the third.
The Gators next drive ended in a punt, but Thiel gave the ball right back on the next play, as
Marcus Davenport forced a fumble recovered by teammate
Max Sessions on the Thiel 19. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the 11, and Lee would then float a perfect fade to
Ben Bachik in the end zone for the Gators' first points of the season.
Ben Ziolkowski's extra point was good, trimming the deficit to 27-7 with 9:35 to go.
Thiel would score on its next possession to go up 34-7, but the Gators quickly struck back, as Lee connected with a streaking
Alec Hutchin for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 34-14 with 6:12 left.
The Tomcats countered with a lengthy possession, capping off a 12-play, 54-yard drive with a 34-yard field goal 50 seconds into the fourth quarter, but again the Gators answered. A 19-yard run by Balla, followed by a 15-yard completion from Lee to Victor moved the ball inside the Thiel 25, before Lee again hooked up with Bachik for an 11-yard completion to set up first-and-goal at the 10. Balla then broke through the middle for his first career rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 37-21 with 9:42 left in regulation.
After a Thiel punt on the ensuing drive, the Gators again moved into Tomcat territory, with Lee's 15-yard pass to McFarland setting up first down at the 20. The drive would stall out, however, as an offensive pass interference penalty was followed by Thiel's third interception of the day. The Tomcats again went to the ground for their final points of the day, as James Lewis broke off a 46-yard touchdown run to make the score 41-21 with 3:30 remaining.
Allegheny picked up a pair of first downs on its final drive, but a costly holding penalty negated a long pass, eventually forcing the Gators to punt with 1:44 left and put a halt to the comeback bid.
For the game, the Gator offense held a 22-20 edge in first downs, and held a nearly five-minute edge in time of possession. However, Thiel's 297 rushing yards gave the Tomcats a 445-305 advantage in total offense, while the Gators were just 2-for-6 in the red zone, compared to a 3-for-4 performance by Thiel.
McFarland led both sides with five receptions, while Baychik and Victor each made four catches on the day for the Gators. Lee ended the night with a line of 11 completions in 24 attempts for 117 yards and two scores, while Nigro went 7-for-14 for 55 yards through the air.
Barca ran for 123 yards to pace the Tomcat offense, while Lewis finished with 93 yards on six tries. Radke completed eight of 12 passes for 148 yards, with DeShawon Bracy making three catches for 76 yards.
Defensively, the Gators' Rhoades totaled 12 tackles, including 10 solo, while Davenport finished with seven, and Sessions and
Craye Nehler five apiece. Two of Sessions' stops were behind the line of scrimmage, totaling 17 yards.
The Gators (0-1) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10, opening up North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 7 p.m. bout at Wooster.
