WOOSTER, Ohio – In a game that saw Allegheny and Wooster combine for 12 touchdowns and 1,009 yards of total offense, the Gators came up just short, falling 49-40 to the Fighting Scots in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Allegheny amassed 459 yards of total offense, its highest single-game output since Nov. 5, 2011 vs. Hiram, led by freshman
Alex Victor (pictured above), who accounted for 133 yards and became the first Gator to score four touchdowns in a game in 13 seasons.
In addition to Victor's prolific performance, sophomore quarterback
Logan Lee completed 18 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns, just the 10th time a Gator signal caller has thrown four touchdown passes in a single game, and the first time since Jimmy Savage did so on Oct. 7, 2006 at Wabash.
While Lee turned in a solid game passing, the Boston native also spearheaded a Gator run game that produced 206 yards, the first time the team eclipsed the 200-yard mark since the aforementioned 2011 Hiram contest. Captaining an option attack, Lee ran for 97 yards on 20 tries, and was one of three Gators to rush for over 50 yards, as sophomore
Tyler Balla gained 60 yards on 18 tries, and Victor 50 on eight carries.
After a 90-minute delay due to heavy thunderstorms, Wooster quickly went to work, using a 7-play, 70-yard drive to score on its opening possession just 2:08 into the first quarter.
As a harbinger of things to come, the Gators answered right back to get onto the scoreboard on their ensuing possession, embarking on a 9-play, 59-yard drive that was capped off with a 28-yard field goal by
Ben Ziolkowski with 10:12 left to make the score 7-3. Allegheny went to the run from the start, totaling 46 of the 59 yards on the ground.
The Gator defense responded by forcing a three-and-out by Wooster, and the offense quickly went back to work. Taking over at their own 34, the Gators stayed on the ground, with Balla running five times for 35 yards on five tries to set up first down at the Wooster 12. Lee then hit Victor with a quick pass over the middle, and the speedy Floridian scampered into the end zone for his first touchdown of the day to put the Gators on top 10-7.
Wooster countered with a 10-play, 66-yard scoring drive to regain a 14-10 lead in the closing stages of the first quarter, before the Fighting Scots forced an Allegheny three-and-out in the opening stages of the second.
After the Gator punt, Wooster took over at its own 29, eventually advancing to the Allegheny 22. The Gator defense would hold, forcing a pair of incompletions, before a 38-yard Wooster field goal attempt went wide. Allegheny couldn't capitalize on the miss, and was forced to punt, leading to a 5-play, 58-yard scoring drive from Wooster than ended with a one-yard sneak from Muntean to put the hosts up 21-10 with 8:30 left in the second stanza.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Gators were whistled for a holding infraction, and were forced to start the drive in the shadows of the goal posts on their own 9-yard line. After gaining little headway on the first two plays, Lee found Hutchin with a quick-hitter. The junior wide out then broke a series of tackles, before scampering 91 yards all the way to the Wooster 1-yard line. The 91-yard completion marked the fourth longest in program history, and the furthest since TJ Salopek completed a 95-yarder in 2009. Victor quickly capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 21-17 with just over six minutes remaining in the half.
In keeping with the game's early theme, Wooster answered right back, marching 74 yards in six plays, highlighted by a pair of Muntean completions that netted 60 yards, to up its advantage to 28-17 on a two-yard plunge by Adams with 4:03 left in the half.
The Gators'
Jake Wilson, who set a new program record with 223 kick return yards in the season-opener a week earlier against Thiel, returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards to give Allegheny the ball at midfield. After an 11-yard completion from Lee to Hutchin, Wooster was whistled for a 15-yard facemask penalty, giving the Gators first down at the Fighting Scots' 20. A pair of rushes by Lee followed by a one-yard plunge by Balla gave Allegheny first down at the 10, before Lee hooked up with Hutchin for a touchdown pass with 29 seconds left in the half to send the teams into the intermission with Wooster holding a 28-24 lead.
Wilson opened the second half with a 25-yard return to give the Gators the ball on their own 27, and the Allegheny offense went back to work. Balla opened the drive with a five-yard run, before another 15-yard facemask infraction on Wooster gave the Gators a first down at their own 47. Victor then rattled off an 11-yard run, and the Fighting Scots were whistled for yet another 15-yard penalty to set up an Allegheny first down on the Wooster 29.
After a 13-yard Balla run and a 9-yard pass to Victor, the drive stalled, bringing out Ziolkowski, who hit his second field goal of the night, this one from 24 yards out, to trim the deficit to 28-27 with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
Wooster then went to the run game to up its lead, using a 31-yard run from Antonio Bailey, followed by a 24-yard touchdown run from Adams, to cap off a quick 90-second drive and put the hosts up 35-27 with just over nine minutes left in the third.
Allegheny's next drive ended in its first turnover of the game, with Wooster taking advantage of a fumble to take a 42-27 lead on a 15-yard Bailey touchdown run with 7:15 left in the quarter.
With 3:04 left in the quarter, Victor continued his breakout night by picking up a bouncing punt and returning it 39 yards to the Wooster 35. On the second play of the drive, the do-it-all rookie took a handoff and went 12 yards, before he scored his third touchdown of the night on a 23-yard reception with 2:20 left in the quarter to cut the gap to 42-34.
The Gator defense forced a pair of Wooster punts as the game entered the final frame, allowing the offense to go back to work. Allegheny took over at its own 17 to open the fourth quarter, and after an 8-yard run by Balla and a 7-yard pass to Victor, Lee kept it on the option and scampered 53 yards to the Wooster 15. Two plays later, Lee found Victor with an 18-yard touchdown pass with 10:39 left, marking the first four-touchdown game for a Gator since Brian Woods in Nov. 2003. Going for the tie, the two-point conversion pass failed, and the Gators trailed 42-40.
The two teams would again trade punts, before Wooster used a 7-play, 52-yard drive to go up 49-40 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Muntean to Nick Cummings with 4:30 left in regulation.
On the ensuing possession, Allegheny would advance the ball to the Wooster 38, but the drive ended with a Gator fumble. The Fighting Scots looked to chew up the clock, but could make no headway, as
Wyatt Boyler blew up a third down rushing attempt for a four-yard loss, resulting in another Wooster punt.
Taking over near midfield, Lee hit
John McFarland with a 10-yard pass, while Wooster was whistled for yet another 15-yard penalty to give the Gators the ball at the Wooster 20. The drive would again stall out, however, as Lee's pass into the end zone was intercepted with 34 seconds left, ending the comeback attempt and sealing the win for the Fighting Scots.
For the game, the Gators held a 28-27 edge in first downs, while for the second straight week, they held a commanding advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for 34 minutes. Despite the defeat, Allegheny also went an exemplary 10-for-19 on third-down conversions, while they wound up with points in six of seven trips inside the red zone.
After his record-setting performance against Thiel a week earlier, Wilson amassed 209 kick return yards – the second most in team history – on nine returns.
Defensively,
Tristan Rhoades totaled 17 tackles, the seventh-most in a game in program history and the most since Andy Schleihauf racked up 17 on Oct. 17, 2009 vs. Denison. Rhoades was one of two Gators to post double-figure tackles, as
Craye Nehler made 10 stops.
Jon Scroxton finished with eight tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage, while
Marcus Davenport and
Freddy Ruiz each totaled 1.5 tackles for loss.
The Gators will now face a tough test as they look for their first victory of the season, as they'll make the long trek to Crawfordsville, Indiana to take on defending NCAC champion Wabash on Saturday, Sept. 17 beginning at 1 p.m.
