MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite wins at top-flight singles and doubles, the Allegheny men's tennis team saw the 2013-14 season end with a 5-3 loss to Denison in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament third-place game on Sunday morning.
The top-flight doubles pairing of senior
Patrick Cole and sophomore
Tyler Triolo capped the most successful doubles season in program history with a 9-8 (7-5) decision against the top Denison pairing of Juan Guerra and Grant Veltman. Cole and Triolo ended the NCAC Tournament with a 3-0 record, improving their season record to 25-6, setting a new program record in doubles victories.
Juniors
Sam Stephenson and
Alexander Hurtuk picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, earning their second victory of the tournament. Denison earned its first win at third flight doubles, picking up an 8-5 win over senior
Charlie Murphy and sophomore
Thomas Manning.
Cole concluded his record-setting Allegheny career with a 6-2, 6-1 win at top-flight singles, concluding his senior campaign with a 26-6 mark and a 83-21 career record, both program records. In addition, Cole concludes his career for the Blue and Gold with 161 combined win, another men's tennis record.
The Gators battled in singles, dropping several closely contested matches to the hosting Big Red. Triolo fell, 7-5, 6-2 in second-flight singles as Hurtuk dropped a 7-5, 6-4 match at No. 5 singles. Stephenson batted but ultimately came up short, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), at sixth-flight singles. Allegheny closes out the 2013-14 campaign with a 15-7 record.
