Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. - Visiting DePauw kept Allegheny's offense in check, as the Gators fell to 0-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 61-49 loss at the David V. Wise Center.
The 49 points are a season-low for the Gators, who were just three days removed from posting a season-high 89 points in a New Years Eve victory over Alfred. Allegheny (3-7, 0-4 NCAC) managed to shoot just 36 percent (18-for-50) from the field, including a 5-for-13 mark from behind the three-point line.
For the second consecutive game, senior
Ryan Stanko led the Gators on the scoresheet, scoring a game-high 18 points, while teammate
Josh Valentic scored 13. Stanko and
Brandon Smith led the Gators with seven rebounds apiece.
Play was even for the majority of the first half, as the two squads shared seven ties and four lead changes in the opening stanza. Â The Gators and Tigers went basket for basket over the first eight minutes of action, before the Gators used a jumper from
Marco Corona and a three from Stanko to take their largest lead of the half, 14-10, with 11:15 remaining. DePauw came back to score six unanswered points over the next two minutes, before a Smith lay up and another Stanko long ball gave the Gators back a 19-16 lead at the eight-minute mark.
The Tigers then seized the momentum heading into the break, using a 13-2 run over the final seven minutes to take a 29-21 lead into the locker room. Â Over those final seven minutes, the Gators went 0-for-7 from the field, with the only two points coming from Corona at the charity stripe.
Valentic scored the first points of the second half to pull the Gators to within two, but DePauw countered with yet another lengthy run, out-scoring Allegheny 20-7 over the first 12 minutes of the second frame to jump out to its largest lead of the night, 49-31, with 8:18 left in regulation.
Led by Stanko, the Gators then attempted to claw back, as he scored the team's next eight points in a three-minute span to cut the gap to 52-41 with 4:30 remaining. Â Valentic then followed with a lay up at the four-minute mark to pull Allegheny to within single digits, 52-43.
It was as close as the Gators would get, however, as a three-pointer from DePauw's Michael Wilkison pushed the lead back out to 12 with just under three minutes remaining, from which the Gators were unable to recover.
DePauw (7-3, 3-1 NCAC) was led on the afternoon by center Tommy Fernitz, who took advantage of an undersized Gator front court to score 17 points. Â He was one of four Tigers to score in double figures, joining Luke Lattner (11 points), Pat Haggin (10), and Bob Dillon (10). Â Fernitz also grabbed a game-high 17 boards, to spur the Tigers to a 42-35 advantage on the glass.
The Tiger shooters didn't fare much better than the Gators, connecting on just 38 percent (22-for-57), including a 5-for-21 showing from outside the arc, while going just 10-for-20 from the foul line compared to the Gators' 8-for-10. Â However, DePauw snared 13 offensive rebounds for the game, scoring 15 second-chance points and owning a 32-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Allegheny now faces a quick turnaround, as the Gators will play their third game in six days on Sunday, January 5th, when they host NCAC foe Wabash at 2 p.m. in the David V. Wise Center.
