MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's tennis squad kicked off the 2013-14 season by finishing second at the 10th annual Nancy J. Heath Tournament, sweeping Grove City, 9-0 before dropping a 9-0 decision to Carnegie Mellon.
Senior
Patrick Cole won at both top-flight singles and doubles against Grove City, following a strong, 8-1 performance with sophomore doubles partner
Tyler Triolo with a 6-1, 6-1 win in singles. Triolo picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win in second-flight singles while junior
Alexander Hurtuk won, 6-0, 6-3, in No. 3 singles.
Fellow fourth year
Charlie Murphy went 2-0 against Grove City, joining sophomore
Thomas Manning in an 8-1 win in No. 3 doubles before a 6-0, 6-2 decision in fourth-flight singles. Manning would add a win in No. 5 singles.
Junior
Daniel Conroy and senior
Frank Mosconi won second-flight doubles, 8-2, to complete the doubles sweep. Conroy then picked up his first singles win of the year, taking a 6-0, 6-1 decision in No. 6 singles.
Cole battled with Carnegie Mellon junior Christian Heaney-Secord, who earned national attention last season, taking the first set 6-4 before dropping a three-set decision.
The Allegheny men's squad will next travel to the two-day Kenyon Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.
