Box Score ERIE, Pa. – Two early tallies from Penn State Behrend stood as the Gators dropped a 3-0 decision on Friday evening to the Lions. Penn State-Behrend scored in the 6th and 10th minute, capitalizing on two of their first three shots to quickly jump ahead of Allegheny, holding on for the victory.
Penn State-Behrend put the pressure on the Gators early, sending a shot on target in the third minute that was stopped by senior goalkeeper
John Lichina. Junior
Axel Monzon took the first shot for the Gators, sending an attempt wide, before the Lions found the back of the net on their following possession, taking advantage of a through ball to create a one-on-one opportunity. The Lions would make it 2-0 with a corner kick volley from the top of the penalty box in the 10th minute.
After giving up the early goals, the Gators were unable to take advantage of corners from Monzon and senior
Daniel McCann along with a header on goal from freshman
Liam McNamee. Allegheny had five corner kick opportunities and five shots in the first half but went into the break trailing, 3-0, after Penn State-Behrend was able to tack on an additional goal in the 40th minute when a short pass found an opening inside the penalty box and the Lions deposited their third goal past Lichina into the corner.
Senior
Michael Severyn started in goal for the Gators in the second half, making three saves in the frame. The Gators were held to two shots in the second, unable to find the back of the net as the Lions held the Allegheny comeback bid at bay.
The Gators will next return home for a two-game home stand, starting on Tuesday, Sept. 24 against Mount Union before opening North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play on Saturday, Sept. 28 when Allegheny welcomes Denison to Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
