McCann's Goal Sends Gators to Season-Opening Win

Senior Daniel McCann scored the first Allegheny goal of 2013, sparking a season-opening, 1-0 win over Concordia (Mich.) on Aug. 30.
Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. – Senior Daniel McCann kicked off the 2013 regular season for the Gators with a goal in the 8th minute, sending Allegheny to a 1-0, rain-shortened win over NAIA member Concordia (Mich.) on Friday, Aug. 30 at  Van Andel Stadium.

The game and opening match of the 2013 Hope College Tournament, was called in the 73rd minute due to inclement weather.  The victory marks the fifth consecutive year that Allegheny has picked up a win in its season opener, and the ninth time under head coach Angelo Panzetta.

"I thought we started the game well with an early goal, very sharp at the beginning," commented Panzetta.  "We got contributions from most of the team, used a lot of guys off the bench and everyone that stepped on the field did a good job concentrating and fitting their role.  It's still a work in progress for us as we look to sharpen some things in the attack and defense but overall it was a good opening game for us."

McCann tallied the first goal of the 2013 campaign after a cross from fellow senior Andrew Miller.  Miller placed the ball inside the eight-yard mark, where McCann was able to slip a shot past the Cardinals' net-minder to give the Gators an early lead.

Senior goalkeeper John Lichina and the Allegheny defense made the lead stick, turning aside 10 Concordia shots.  Lichina also made one save while securing his 20th career shutout, a program record for the Gators.

The Gators placed four shots on goal, as McCann placed two on target along with sophomore Brenton Stoddart and freshman Zach Stryker

Allegheny will return to Van Andel Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. to take on host Hope College.  The Flying Dutchmen dropped a 2-1 decision to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Oberlin on Aug. 30.
