Late Penalty Kick Spoils Senior Day

Senior goalkeeper John Lichina stopped nine shots for the Gators against DePauw
Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – A nine-save performance from senior goalkeeper John Lichina and fellow fourth year Brian Graham's 62nd minute goal fell just short, as the DePauw Tigers tallied a 81st minute penalty goal to sneak past Allegheny, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

The Tigers mustered a determined offensive attack, rattling off 22 shots, 11 on target, including 13 attempts and seven corners in the first half.  Graham's equalizing goal in the second half was assisted by freshman Liam McNamee, who picked up his first helper of the season.

DePauw began the offensive pressure early on in the matchup, taking the first shot of the game in the third minute while procuring the first corner kick in the fourth.    Senior Daniel McCann had the first Allegheny opportunity in the fifth minute, placing a header on target after a DePauw foul.  The Tigers controlled the pace for most of the first half, not allowing the Gators an offensive opportunity while placing four shots on goal, three of which were saved by Lichina.  DePauw ultimately cashed in on an opportunity in the 29th minute, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, DePauw placed four shots on net within the first 15 minutes before momentum turned to the side of the Gators.  Junior Cameron Olson jostled with a DePauw defender near the Tigers sideline before the defender ushered the ball out of bounds, setting up a throw in on the near sideline.  McNamee took the opportunity and threw a strong ball in towards the near post, where a charging Graham deflected the throw with the top of his head into the goal, tying the game at 1-1.

Lichina continued his impressive afternoon in goal for the Gators, making two saves after the game-tying goal, as the Allegheny offense began to create additional opportunities looking for the go-ahead tally.  Shots by Olson, Graham and senior Paul Teufel were blocked as Olson and fellow third year Daniel Szekely narrowly missed the target on a slew of late opportunities for the Gators on the offensive end.  DePauw tallied the penalty kick goal after a foul in the box by the Gators, taking a 2-1 lead with under 10 minutes remaining.

McCann had an outstanding look at the equalizer in the 82nd minute, connecting on an electric bicycle kick that was narrowly saved by DePauw goalkeeper Jake Pezzuto.  Senior Keith Danley had the final look on net for the Gators, sending a shot wide in the 87th minute, as DePauw was able to run out the clock and pick up the victory.

Prior to the game, nine seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Allegheny men's soccer program as they played in their final game for the Blue and Gold.  Lichina, Graham, Teufel, Danley and McCann along with seniors Mark Burkhart, Andrew Miller, Michael Severyn and Alex Etherington were honored prior to Saturday's kickoff.

The Gators will complete their 2013 campaign on the road, battling with the Yeomen of Oberlin College on Wednesday, Oct. 30 before completing the regular season against Wittenberg on Nov. 2.
