GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny men's tennis team competed in the final day of the NCAC Championships Sunday afternoon, defeating Oberlin College and falling to Wabash in the fifth-place match to end the season as the number six team in the conference.
The Gators dominated the Yeomen for the second time in a week, earning a 5-1 victory for a place in the fifth place match.
The Gators swept the doubles competition, going up 3-0 needing just two wins in singles play to take the contest by decision. Allegheny received those wins form Alex Hurtuk in the number two singles slot, and
Charlie Murphy in number three singles to take the match 5-1.
The win set up a battle with the Little Giants of Wabash in the fifth-place match. It was dramatic affair, as both teams gave their all in their final match of the season. Wabash took two of the three doubles matches to go up 2-1; however, Allegheny would battle back.
Patrick Cole won in number one singles 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and
Daniel Conroy defeated Phil Kubisz in number six singles 7-5, 6-3. After the Little Giants took number two singles it set up for a fantastic finish.
Charlie Murphy went up 6-4, 6-7 (3), 3-0 in number three singles but was unable to pull it out as Wabash would win the fifth and decisive match in number four singles to take the contest 5-3.
The Gators finish the 2011-12 with a 10-9 record, while going 3-1 in NCAC East play.
