CELEVLAND, Ohio – The Allegheny men's tennis team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio on Friday night to take on No. 19 Case Western Reserve. The Gators would put forth some spirited matches against the Spartans, who are also ranked No. 5 regionally, but Case would be too much to handle, sweeping Allegheny 9-0.
The Gators would run into a buzz saw, as the Spartans have been on a roll this spring, including a convincing victory over No. 16 DePauw just six days earlier.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking match of the day for Allegheny came in the number one singles slot, where
Patrick Cole had a chance to avenge his lone loss of the season against Will Drougas, who is ranked No. 12 regionally.
Cole would take the first set 6-3, but would drop the second 7-6 after serving for the match at 5-4. With everything knotted at one, the match would go to a supertiebreak. Cole would go up 9-5 in the supertiebreak, taking Drougas on the brink with match point. But Drougas would battle back, and win the final six points, edging Cole 11-9 to take the match.
The Gators will be off from competition until March 18, when they will travel on their annual spring trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina to take on Wisconson-Eau Claire.
