GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Bobby Over delivered a scintillating performance on Saturday in leading Allegheny men's cross country to a stunning second place finish at the 2011 Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin College. Racing in one of the nation's largest meets of the weekend, Over established the fastest time ever for an Allegheny male on an 8k course en route to third overall in the individual standings.
Over, who is a junior transfer from Wadsworth, Ohio, closed as the meet's top collegiate finisher after outkicking Calvin's Dan Kerr and Matt Vander. He completed the circuit in 24:35.94 after making a big push in the final two miles of the race.
Allegheny also received outstanding results from senior
Pat McLaughlin and junior
Kevin Edwards. Both competitors turned in arguably the best races of their careers. McLaughlin finished eighth overall with a time of 25:07.70 and Edwards finished ninth in 25:08.16. The top five was rounded out by
Mike Vlah, who ran an impressive 25:23.97, and
Jack Denison (26:28.70). Edwards and Denison each authored massive personal records behind ideal racing conditions.
“I'm incredibly excited about the way we raced today,” said head coach
Brent Wilkerson. “Our guys have heard the term rebuilding a lot, but the truth is we have a really good team. We have a long way to go this season, but I'm pumped about our potential as we move forward.”
The Knight Invitational featured 18 teams and over 200 finishers, but the Gators had nine harriers inside the top 90. Allegheny finished second on the team board with 81 points, while nationally-ranked No. 5 Calvin took home the championship. Ohio Northern, which is ranked fifth in the Great Lakes region, finished third with 117 points.

Brennan Hamilton (26:49.80) in the individual standings. Fellow first-year
Alex Simon came through the chute in 27:05.70, in what was another solid performance for the Blue and Gold.
