ERIE, Pa. – With the instability of the weather this week, the men's tennis match against Case Western Reserve University was moved to the Pennbriar Racquet Club in Erie, Pa. The indoor facility allowed t he match to be played on Friday evening, but Case Western proved to be too much the Gators (8-3) as the Spartans (7-6) took the non-conference match 8-1.Prior to falling from the national ranks, Case Western was nationally-ranked no. 21 as recently as March 17th.
With a tall task ahead of the Gators, the young squad battled hard the entire match. The win for the Gators came in flight one singles as rookie
Patrick Cole continued his excellent play as the Gators' number one singles player. Cole, the reigning NCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, pulled the upset over the regionally-ranked no.17 singles player Sean Carr, 6-7(1), 6-3, 10-6. It is the second time that Cole has matched up against a regionally-ranked opponent and in each match he has forced a super-breaking set.
The Gators will look to rebound against a tough conference opponent in no.7 Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon back in Erie, this time at the Westwood Racquet Club. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
