HILTON HEAD, S.C. – On Monday afternoon, the men's and women's tennis teams endured slight setbacks as both teams lost to regionally-ranked, and in the case of the women's team, nationally-ranked, Carleton College on day two of the Gators' annual spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Gator men (6-2) lost 9-0, and the Gator women (5-4) lost 8-1.
On the men's side, rookie Pat Cole, playing in flight one for the Gators, forced a tie-breaking set against the ITA Central Region Ranked no. 13 singles player Peter Dunn. Cole dropped the first set 6-3, but rallied in the second set and blanked Dunn 6-0, then fell just short in the tie-breaking set 11-13. Teamed with Cole in flight one doubles play was
Jacob Allmaras, he and Cole took the no.17 regionally-ranked doubles pairing of Dan Vollman and Paul Cooper to the brink before falling 9-8(3).
The Carleton women's team came into the match nationally-ranked no. 27 according to the ITA, and ranked no. 8 in the Central Region. Sara Longo and Deb Landau forced tie-breaking sets, with each taking the opening set in their matches. The doubles pairing of Landau and Elyse Schmitt came back from a 6-3 deficit to win the flight three doubles match against the duo of Flesher and Greenberg, 9-7.
Both teams will look to bounce back tomorrow against Bethel College on Tuesday, March 22nd. Both matches are set to begin at 8:00 am.
