Second Half Surge Propels Gators to Victory

Box Score

MEADVILLE, Pa. -
Emotions ran high Monday night, as Allegheny battled with local rival Penn State-Behrend at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. The Gators would use two second half goals to battle back from a one goal, halftime deficit, to defeat the Lions in each team's final non-conference matchup of the season.

Both teams got off to a slow start, feeling each other out, while being cautious not to give up many scoring opportunities. As the tempo picked up, so did the physical play. During the 19th minute, tempers started to  flare as a scrum in the middle of the field led to Allegheny being assessed two yellow cards, while Penn State-Behrend was given one of their own. After receiving two more yellow cards in the first half, the Lions would draw first blood, when Jake Gamble scored in the 39th minute to put Penn State-Behrend up one going into the half.

Allegheny didn't waste any time tying the game in the second half as junior Conor Azevedo scored his first goal of the year off a beautifully played ball from sophomore Andrew Miller.

Tension continued to mount throughout the half, and it came to a boil in the 75th minute when Penn State-Behrend head coach Dan Perritano received his second yellow card and was ejected from the contest. Shortly after, Lions midfielder joined his coach in the locker room after being dealt his second yellow of the contest.

While the storyline seemed to be all of the cautions and ejections, junior David DelGreco made sure that wasn't the only thing Gators fans would talk about. In the 85th minute DelGreco made a beautiful move, settling down a pass from Travis Tasker, chipping it over an on-coming defender and volleying the ball into the net for his fourth game-winning goal of the season.

The win improves Allegheny to 8-3-0 overall, as they will head back to conference play on Saturday, October 8 when they travel to Crawfordsville, Indiana to take on Wabash at 12:00 pm.
