Gators Fall to 22 Ranked DePauw at Home

Box Score

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny men's soccer team hosted the 22 ranked team in the country on Saturday afternoon, when they faced off against the Tigers of DePauw. Allegheny would prove that they can hang with the big boys; however, DePauw would use three second half goals to topple the Gators 3-1.

Allegheny (11-4-1, 4-2-1 NCAC) would control a majority of the first half, mounting numerous quality scoring opportunities. The first came in just the seventh minute, as sophomore Andrew Miller made a great run with the ball on the near side. He was challenged on the end line by a Tiger defender, but somehow managed to stay on his feet and get a beautiful cross in the box that was thwarted by a DePauw defender before it could find the foot of a Gator.

The Gators second scoring chance came just five minutes later as senior captain Matt Weintraub made a great break on a sloppy DePauw pass and speed down the near side. He drew numerous defenders to him, which enabled him to make a perfect cross to junior David DelGreco who just couldn't get enough on it, as the Tigers keeper made a nice save.

After the first 45, Allegheny looked to be in nice position as they had outshot DePauw 5-1. Sophomore keeper John Lichina, and the rest of the Gators back line looked very solid as Allegheny would look to take the lead in the second half. They had their chance early in the second half, as both senior Arthur Smith and junior Tim Egan had nice looking headers that had the potential to find the back of the net.

It was the Tigers though who would get on the board first, as Sam Meyer put it in behind Lichina to give DePauw a 1-0 lead. Just minutes later, Lichina would keep it 1-0 as he would make a remarkable diving stop on Andy Morrison, DePauw's leading scorer. Morrison would come back though, breaking through and giving the Tigers a two goal cushion.

Allegheny looked to cut the lead in half when sophomore Alex Etherington played a great ball to Egan off a free kick that Egan buried behind Nathan Sprenkel. However, the referee had ruled the ball not ready for play and the goal did not stand.

Allegheny wouldn't have to wait long though, as Just minutes later the Gators would indeed cut the lead in half, as freshman Cameron Olson scored the first goal of his career off a free kick from just outside the box.

But it would not be enough, as DePauw would ice the game when Meyer scored his second goal to give the Tigers the 3-1 victory.

Lichina would end the game with three saves, and Allegheny would out shot DePauw 11-8 as the Gators fell for just the second time in conference play.

The Gators are off until Wednesday, October 26 when they will travel to Oberlin, Ohio to take on the Yeomen of Oberlin College.
