Denison Hands Gators First Conference Loss of Season

Box Score

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny men's soccer team went into Saturday's matchup against Denison looking to stay undefeated in conference play; however, the Big Red would spoil those hopes, beating the Gators 3-0.

Denison would control play early, keeping the Gator defense on its heels, being awarded three corner kicks in a 50 second span. After numerous opportunities, the Big Red would finally capitalize with a header off a corner kick to give them a 1-0 lead.

The goal seemed to spark Allegheny, as they would turn it up a notch, peppering Denison with shots from all over the pitch. Perhaps Allegheny's best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute, when off a free kick, Tyler Danzey put a beautiful shot on goal that was saved by Denison keeper Matt Wagner. Sophomore David DelGreco controlled the rebound, and was also denied by Wagner after a mad scramble in front of the goal.

The second half started much like the first half did, with Denison controlling the tempo and putting good pressure on Allegheny's back line. Once again, just like the first half, Denison would score early off a set piece two put the Gatos down 2-0.

Despite the deficit, Allegheny would continue to push ahead, outshooting the Big Red 12-11 overall. Denison would add another late goal as they would hand the Gators its first conference loss of the season.

Sophomore John Lichina would end the contest with three saves, while junior David DelGreco would put three shots on goal, as the Gators were shutout for the first time at home this season.

The loss drops Allegheny to 7-3-0 overall, and 1-1-0 in NCAC play. The Gators will host non-conference foe Penn State-Behrend on Monday, October 3 at 7:30 pm.
