MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) and
Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) have been named the 2024-25 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Athletes of the Year.
Hassenplug heads into next week's NCAA Division III Championships at the Midvale Country Club in Penfield, New York, as one of the most decorated men's golfers in school and Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) history. The senior guided the Gators to their second consecutive PAC championship and national championship berth with an impressive 33-stroke victory over Washington and Jefferson College. Furthermore, Hassenplug captured individual medalist and Player of the Year honors for the third consecutive season. He's only the second PAC golfer to win individual medalist at least three times, and he tied Nathan Smith '01 for the most individual titles in team history. Hassenplug, who won the Pennsylvania Classic at Penn State University's Blue Course in a two-hole playoff in March, placed in the top five in eight of 10 tournaments this season. He also enters the NCAA Championships with a new team record with an average of 71.9 strokes per round.
Including his recognition from the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) as a freshman, Hassenplug is a four-time all-conference first-team selection. He was crowned Allegheny's Male Senior Achievement Award winner and will be recognized at the PAC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Banquet on Tuesday, May 13.
Miller complimented a record-breaking fall with the women's soccer team with two silver medals in the shot put during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. On the pitch, she posted one of the greatest seasons by a Gator in nearly four decades. Miller broke the team record for points in a season with 66, surpassing two 62-point campaigns by Allegheny Hall of Famer Nellie Springer Kraus '89 from 1985 and 1986. Miller scored 27 goals, one shy of Spring Kraus' record from 1985, and tied for third place with 12 assists. Among national leaders, Miller was tied for second in goals and ranked third in points per game (3.30), fourth in points, and fifth in goals per game (1.35). She also led the country in shots per game (7.60) and was top 25 in game-winning goals (6), assists, and assists per game (0.60).Â
Following her breakthrough performance with the women's soccer team, Miller earned numerous awards. She was voted the PAC Offensive Player of the Year and named to the All-PAC, All-ECAC, and United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Teams. Sparked by her tremendous senior year, Miller graduated from Allegheny fourth in program history in career goals (41) and fifth in points (97).
With the track and field team, Miller received additional All-PAC honors in the shot put. During the PAC Indoor Championships in February, she was second in the shot put at 12.74 meters, a mere two centimeters shy of first place. She earned another runner-up finish at the outdoor conference meet with a mark of 12.32 meters. Her efforts helped the Gators finish second in the team standings at both meets.
