Gators Support Local Cancer Care Throughout October

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Allegheny College Department of Athletics hosted a series of events throughout October to raise funds and show support for the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute at Meadville Medical Center.

Over the past two weeks, Allegheny's field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball teams each dedicated home games to breast cancer awareness. Several Gators also wore pink accessories on the field. Thanks to the sale of pink T-shirts and 50/50 raffle tickets at those games, the athletics department raised more than $2,200 for the Benevolent Fund at the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute.

Additionally, the Allegheny baseball team held its third annual "Grand Slams For Mammograms" event during its fall-ball doubleheader against Gannon University on October 4. The festivities included a survivor walk around the bases and a ceremonial first pitch to honor those affected by breast cancer. The Gators also took the field in special uniforms with pink trim and numbers. In total, this year's Grand Slams for Mammograms collected more than $5,000 in donations.

The Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute at Meadville Medical Center is a comprehensive cancer care center committed to delivering state-of-the-art treatment, support, and wellness services to patients throughout the Meadville community. The Institute's Benevolent Fund provides financial assistance to patients, helping cover the cost of medications, transportation, and other expenses during their time of need.
