BOULDER CREEK, Nev. -- On Wednesday, the Allegheny College men's golf team concluded play at the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships with a strong round at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Competing in the national championship tournament for the first time since 2006, the Gators finished 23rd out of 43 teams. After tying for 30th on Tuesday, Allegheny climbed seven spots on day two. The team carded a 36-hole score of 599 (+23).
The top 18 teams and the six highest-placing individuals from non-advancing teams will move on to the championship rounds at Boulder Creek on Thursday and Friday. The 72-hole scores will determine team and individual national champions. Although the Gators shaved three strokes off of their first-round score, they were 11 shy of the cut.
Allegheny's second-round 298 (+10) included 10 birdies and three eagles. On the 530-yard, par-5 fifth, every Gator finished par or better, highlighted by two eagles from
Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and
Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School). On the 551-yard 15th, three Gators birdied and
Bergas Anargya (Jakarta, Indonesia/Binus School Simprug) picked up an eagle.
Melzar and
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) both fired a 2-over 74 on Wednesday. Melzar paced the Blue and Gold with four birdies and had one eagle on the aforementioned fifth hole. Hassenplug ended the 36-hole portion of the tournament in a tie for 52nd place out of 221 total competitors, followed by Melzar in a tie for 65th.
After carding an 80 (+8) at The Legacy Golf Club on Tuesday, Khan improved significantly at Boulder Creek. He had the best score on the team on the front nine with a 1-under 35, which helped him record a 1-over 73 on the day. Allegheny's biggest mover in the second round, Khan leaped 51 spots up the leaderboard and tied for 125th.
Anargya, who was one stroke behind Khan with a cumulative 154 (+10), was the only Gator to finish below par on the back nine. He parred every hole on the back except the 15th, his eagle, and ended the round with a 5-over 77.
Faaris Cheema (Dubai, UAE/Kings School Al Barsha), who birdied the 11th and 16th, posted a 9-over 81.
