STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's golf team returned to action for the first time this spring with a runner-up performance at the Pennsylvania Classic, an 18-team event featuring all colleges and universities from Keystone State at the Penn State Golf Courses.

The Gators ended the first round, which was held on the Penn State White Course, atop the leaderboard with a two-stroke lead over second-place Franklin and Marshall College. Allegheny, however, was unable to fend off the Diplomats in the second round, held on Saturday at the Penn State Blue Course.

F&M finished with a cumulative 582, four strokes ahead of Allegheny's 586. Swarthmore College placed third with a 16-over 588.

Nadir Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School) and Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) were the only two individuals to score below par on Friday. Khan led the entire field with a 2-under 69 after carding five birdies on the back nine. Hassenplug was only one stroke behind Khan with a 1-under 70. 

Although Khan and Hassenplug couldn't quite duplicate the same level success on Saturday, both ended in the top five, as Hassenplug took third and Khan tied for fourth to lead the Gators.
