Men's Golf Makes Improvements at 50th Kuhn Memorial Invitational

Complete Results

MEADVILLE, Pa. --
The Allegheny College men's golf team fended off some raindrops on Sunday to complete the second round of the 50th annual Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational on its home course at the Country Club of Meadville on Monday.

The entire field, including all three Allegheny teams, enjoyed the better weather during the second round. As a result, all 13 teams scored better on the last 18 holes than on the first. The Gators' "A" squad placed fourth overall and was 16 strokes better during the final round with an even-par 288. The "B" team shaved eight strokes off its second-round score, while the "C" team was two strokes better.

The reigning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) MVP, Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East), continued to pace Allegheny with another top-10 performance. He climbed nine places on the individual leaderboard to tie for 10th with a 1-over 145. He was excellent on Monday, finishing par or better on all 18 holes, which included birdies on the fifth, eighth, and 15th holes. It marks the second consecutive tournament in which Hassenplug has recorded a round of 69 (-3).

Likewise, Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) went from a 3-over 75 on Sunday to a 1-under 71 on Monday. Although he had more birdies in the first round, he only bogeyed one hole in the second round and finished the front nine with birdies on the eighth and ninth. Melzar tied for 13th place out of 64 total competitors.

One of only eight eagles during the entire two-day event came from Faaris Cheema (Dubai, UAE/Kings School Al Barsha). He, like a majority of those who eagled at the tournament, did so on the par-5 ninth.

Three of the biggest movers at the tournament for Allegheny were Gasparo Porco (Butler, Pa./Knoch), James Stoltenberg (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), and Connor Bell (Montrose, Colo./Montrose). Bell cut nine strokes off his round one score for a 3-over 75 on Monday, Stoltenberg was seven strokes better at 81 (+9), and Porco, playing in his first collegiate tournament, improved by six strokes to 79 (+7).
