HARRISBURG, Pa. -- On Monday afternoon, the Allegheny College men's golf team wrapped up the second round of The Gauntlet, a challenging 14-team event hosted by Premier Collegiate Tournaments at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Club in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The Gauntlet featured a host of talented teams, most of which finished last season ranked among the top teams in their region, including preseason No. 25 nationally-ranked Franklin and Marshall College. No team in the field finished above 600, and only four teams carded a round of 300 or above.
The Diplomats won the team portion of the tournament with a 2-under 574, while Randolph-Macon College, the leader after day one, was just one stroke behind with a 575. York College of Pennsylvania trailed by just two strokes with an even 576.
As a team, Allegheny tied Farmingdale State College for sixth place with a 12-over 588 after firing rounds of 290 (+2) and 298 (+12).
Carter Hassenplug (North East, Pa./North East) led the way by tying York's Jason Velez for second place, as both players concluded the 36-hole tournament with a 5-under 139. Hassenplug, who was 3-under on Sunday, did not bogey any of the 18 holes during the first round. He added four birdies on Monday, including three on the front nine, but bogeyed the par-3 eighth and par-4 10th to finish with a 2-under 70.
Zachary Melzar (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional),
Connor Bell (Montrose, Colo./Montrose), and
Faaris Cheema (Dubai, UAE/Kings School Al Barsha) each finished within a stroke of each other. Melzar was 5-over par with a combined 149, and both Bell and Cheema were 6-over par at 150.
