SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Allegheny women's basketball team was unable to overcome a second half Wittenberg run as it fell to the Tigers, 57-46, on the road Saturday (Feb. 5).
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) led the Gators with a season-high 24 points, including 10-of-13 on free-throws. Lauer also added nine rebounds.
Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) had a double-double with 16 rebounds and 11 points.
Breanna Warner (Hopewell, Pa./Sewickley Academy) also tallied 11 points.
The teams matched baskets throughout the early portions of the opening quarter, though a late Tiger basket gave them a 14-10 edge entering the second quarter.
The Wittenberg lead grew to seven just minutes into the second quarter, but a quick pair of baskets by Lauer brought the game within three, 23-20. However, Wittenberg scored the final two baskets of the half as it owned a 27-20 halftime lead.
The Tigers lead extended to as much as 14 in the third quarter. The Gators were able to chip away at the lead late in the period, cutting the margin to 40-33 heading into the final quarter.
The Gators cut the lead to five, 42-37, in the final frame, but the Tigers responded with a 7-0 run to regain control.
Allegheny will remain on the road and travel to Indiana for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Feb. 6 at No. 13 DePauw.
