MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Over the first two days of the 2022 NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Social Media Campaign, Allegheny College student-athletes shared their thoughts on the importance of creating an inclusive environment and what allyship means to them. Today, Assistant Athletic Director/Compliance/SWA/DEI Designee
Kate Costanzo shared a brief message on behalf of the College's Department of Athletics regarding the importance of the final theme for the week: Strength in Unity.
"At Allegheny College, our coaches, student-athletes, & staff are committed to creating & maintaining inclusive teams where everyone feels a sense of belonging, that their voices are heard & that they can show up as their authentic self. We recognize that we must do the work each day to continue to grow our diversity & actively foster inclusion within our department & community. We know that we are stronger together & possess great strength in our unity."
As the campaign comes to a close, it is important to remember that being an ally and helping to foster a welcoming environment is not a week-long task, but an every day obligation to the Allegheny community. For those interested in more ways to help make a difference, we encourage them to visit the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, Social Justice (IDEAS) Center in the campus center or visit
https://sites.allegheny.edu/ideas/. The IDEAS Center is a social/emotional brave space providing support and validation of the experiences of under-resourced student populations. The center also provides a gathering place for dialogue and support surrounding the concerns of inclusion, diversity, equity, access and social justice.
Student-athletes looking for more ways to get involved are also encouraged to reach out to Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) DEI Committee chairs Maya Francisco from the field hockey team and Benjamin Gallegos from men's lacrosse.
