BECKLEY, W. Va. -- The Allegheny baseball team scored the final eight runs of the day en route to a 9-5 win over John Carroll to claim the finale of the three-game set at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
Trailing by a 5-1 margin heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Gators scratched across a run in that frame to make it a 5-2 game. With the bases loaded following base hits by
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and
Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) and a two-out walk to
Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Chutko came in to score on a wild pitch for the lone run.
Allegheny got two more runs back in the bottom of the fifth as
Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) and
Andrew Vincent (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) were hit by pitches to put two runners on for Chutko, who knocked both in with a double. The bottom of the sixth, was where the most damage was done. Phillips reached on a error to lead off and went to second on the same play. He would score the game-tying run when he stole third and the throw sailed into left field, which allowed Phillips to score. With
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) and
John Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) both in scoring position,
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) plated one run with a single to left, as would pinch-hitter
Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) by way of an RBI ground out. The eighth and ninth runs for the Gators came on an RBI single by Chutko that scored Heckert and an RBI double from
Hunter Lohr (Bowhoinham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) that plated Chutko.
Chutko finished a career-best 5-for-5 with a double, three RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Heckert, Kelly and Budnar each collected two hits on the day, with Kelly stealing three bags as well.
Freshman
Zachary Wilson (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings of hitless ball with two strikeouts and two walks.
Nate Pastorek (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) worked the first 5.0 innings, yielding six hits and five runs (four earned), with five strikeouts and three walks.
Nick Tarasi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) threw a hitless ninth with a strikeout.
The Gators are scheduled to host Alfred State (N.Y.) and Ithaca next weekend, Feb. 29-March 1, with the weekend opening at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Alfred State.
